Guidance on nutrition to support and maintain your pet's overall health and well-being.
A few extra pounds can be a significant factor in the overall health of your pet. Most weight problems can be avoided or managed through proper feeding amounts and/or diet types. A large part of it really is portion control!
It’s important to not focus so much on the number on the scale as it is to consider the Body Condition Score (BCS) of your pet. We use a 5 scale, where 3/5 is considered ideal and healthy. You should be able to see a bit of a waist on your pet.
Breeds aren’t necessarily prone to being overweight, some pets just don’t carry it well. Through proper management, any pet can be at a healthy weight.
If you have concerns about your pet being overweight, this is an ideal opportunity to meet with one of our technicians or veterinarians to discuss diet type, feeding amount, meal schedule, and exercise level. Together, we can develop a weight loss program to help your pet achieve a healthy weight and ultimately live a better life!
